Balancing equations relay

Equipment list

  • Chemical equation papers (1 equation per side) - enough for class

  • Dry erase paper covers (optional)

  • Dry-erase markers

  • Clipboards (options)

Explanation

Class can complete this lesson in teams of 2-4 students.

Chemical equation sheets are placed at the desired distance away from each team.

Students from each team take turns running/walking up to their equation sheet (either solo or in a pair) and balancing one component of the equation, then returning to their starting position.

The team continues to take turns balancing one component of the equation at a time until the equation is balanced.

The team then shares their work with the teacher.

Each team can balance as many equations as the lesson time permits. (Teams can swap equation sheets, or each team can complete their own set of equations).
