Set of letter tiles
Printed Periodic Table of Elements on a clipboard (as a reference sheet for students)
Recipe cards with element names written on them (teacher's choice), enough for each team to have 10-12 cards.
Explanation
Set-Up:
Divide class into 4 teams.
Scatter the letter tiles at a reasonable distance from the teams' starting area.
Provide each team with a stack of element name recipe cards
Have the periodic table to elements reference sheet available for all teams to review if needed.
To play/learn:
2 students from each team select an element card from their team stack and read it aloud to their teammates. The whole team names the abbreviated form of the selected element, then 2 students move to the scattered tiles to retrieve the correct letters and return them to their team.
The teacher moves amongst the teams to check on the students' work.
The students continue this way until they have completed their element card stack.
Variation/progression
Using number tiles, this PAL activity can be done to review the atomic numbers of elements.
