True or false

Equipment list

  • A signboard with ‘True’ or ‘False’ for each team.

  • A sheet with statements issued from different subjects; the statements can also be read aloud by the teacher.

Explanation

Form teams with 2 to 5 pupils (fixed teams?). The signboard is placed fifteen to twenty yards away from the teacher and the teams. The teacher reads aloud a statement from a familiar subject which the pupils have recently worked with. The teams determine whether the statement is right or wrong and run either all together or only half the team to their signboard. They show the ‘True’ or ‘False’ side to the teacher, who says what is correct before the pupils run back to him. Then comes another statement. To increase the competitiveness of the game, each team giving a correct answer gets a point, and possibly an extra point for the team that is first to give that answer.

Variation/progression

This can be used when working with multiplication tables, English vocabulary, word classes, or terms used in maths, natural sciences or other subjects. Pupils can also say what is correct when the teacher reads out a statement that is wrong.

Participants’ feedback on activity

If pupils ‘cheat’ by trying to see what the others have selected before giving their own answer, the teacher can blow a whistle when all teams must then pick up right or wrong. It is advisable to prepare the questions in advance.
