Bean Bag Toss (Partitioning)
Equipment list
Hula hoops
Bean bags
White board (with part whole diagram)
Markers
Explanation
Have enough hula hoops for each pair of students.
Each pair of students should have 10 bean bags
The hula hoop should be placed about 20 paces away. The white board can stay next to the hula hoop
Students take turns tossing the beanbag towards the hula hoop.
When all 10 are thrown, students move to the hula hoop and count how many bean bags are in the hula hoop and how many are outside the hoop. Record results on the part whole model drawn on the white board.
Variation/progression
If the bean bags are numbered, students in the older grades can add the total of the bean bags that landed in the hoop and record that as a part. The total of the bean bags outside the hoop is the other part, and the total of all the beanbags is the whole.
