Greater Than & Less Than Number Line

Equipment list

  • 1 set of number tiles (1-100)


Explanation

To set up:
Spread the number tiles out in the centre of the learning area.
Divide students into 4 teams.
4 teams move the their starting position, forming a rectangle around the number tiles.
Teacher retrieves the 0, 50, and 100 tile from the centre to set up as benchmarks for a collective number line along one side of the learning area.


To play:
Two students from each team move in the centre and each pick up one randomly selected number tile. They then return to their team. The whole team assesses which number is greater, which number is less than.
The student with the greater than number returns their number to the central area, while the student with the less than number places their number along the collective number line.
The next two students move into the centre to complete the same process.
Play continues until all numbers have been placed on the collective number line.


Variation/progression

  • Teacher or students can decide to place the greater-than or less-than number on the number line. Or even switch it up half-way through.
