Explanation

We will start class by walking outside to a paved area on the school grounds, and gather in a circle (velcro elbows). I will explain part 1 of the lesson (summary below), and then split them into four groups.

Part 1:

Students will work together to recreate the unit circle with chalk on a paved area on the school grounds. By this time the students will be familiar with the unit circle and have a good idea of what it looks like and how to use it. An answer bank will be provided for the students and I will be guiding them along the way. Students can use different colors of chalk, and a string to help get a perfect circle (someone can stand in the middle with the string and another can hold the end, walking around the person in the middle creating a circle). They will have a sheet to fill in their answers. The unit circle is needed for part two of the lesson.

After everyone has completed their unit circle, we will gather back in a circle (velcro elbows), and I will explain part two of the lesson (summary below).

Part 2:

Envelope relay:

Each team will have an envelope containing a set of questions. Each question will have a symbol, instead of a number, so students aren’t worried about solving questions in a certain order. The envelopes will be placed at a reasonable distance (depending on the age and accessibility of my class). Students will take turns running/walking to collect 1 question from their envelope and returning to their team with the question. The team will then work together to answer the question. One player from the team will then run/walk to the teacher to check their answer. If the answer is correct, they continue on with the next question. If the answer is incorrect, the team must try again. This continues until all questions in each envelope have been answered. A student can also take the role of checking answers if suitable.

After all teams have answered their questions, we will gather again in a circle (velcro elbows). We will take time to discuss the questions as a class.

  • Ask students if they found anything difficult

  • Ask if there are any questions they would like me to go over in class

  • Ask if they enjoyed the activity/ how they felt about it

Once we are finished with our discussion we will go back inside.
