Reviewing Place Value Concepts: Making 5 and 6 Digit Numbers

Equipment list

  • Number bean bags

  • Clipboards

  • Sheets of paper

  • Pencils

Explanation

Bean Bags are placed in the middle of the area of play. Divide students into their colour teams. Provide each team with a clipboard, pencil, and paper.

Groups of two team members run to the centre and grab 2 bean bags. They return to their team and together they try to make a 4 digit number. The team records the number on the piece of paper. Then the next group of two team members runs the bean bags back to the centre, and grabs 2 more bean bags. This continues until 10 numbers are recorded, and then ordered from least to greatest on the piece of paper.

Teams are then asked to share their largest and smallest number.

Variation/progression

Same process can be completed using 3 bean bags to create 6 digit numbers.
