Big Brother Number Find

Equipment list

List of addition or subtraction questions. (by one or two units)

Papers with the numerical answers to the questions.

Explanation

Divide students into groups of about 5.

Numbers will be written on blank paper spread out through the room on the floor and covered by another piece of blank paper.

There are 5-8 questions to ask the students (5-8 rounds of the activity).

Ask the students the addition/subtraction question and give the students time to discuss in their group what the answer may be.

Examples:

  • What is 1 more than 5? (Answer: 6)

  • What is 2 less than 10? (Answer: 8)

  • What is 2 more than 13? (Answer: 15)

Once everyone is ready, one person from the group will try to find the paper on the floor that has the answer they are looking for.

There will be other answers on the ground that are not correct – students will have to flip over the papers to find the correct answer and return the papers to their original position if incorrect.

The student will bring back the correct paper to their group

Once everyone has found their paper and brought it back to their group, ask the students to reveal their answers.

Ask a few groups to share how they found the answer.

Repeat this for 5-8 rounds.

Variation/progression

For each round, students will be given an instruction on HOW to get back to their group once they found their paper – every time give an option to walk. Examples:

  • Hop or walk back

  • Run or walk back

  • Walk backwards or walk back

  • Skip or walk back

  • Walk on tippy toes or walk back

  • Crab walk or walk back

  • Bear crawl or walk back

  • Jump or walk back
