Biodiversity: Kingdom Classification
Equipment list
60 cue cards labeled with common names of different organisms (10 from each kingdom)
3 pieces of bristol board, each broken down into 6 sections labeled Animalia, Plantae, Protista, Fungi, Eubacteria, and Archaebacteria
Explanation
in the style of ASK Bean Bag Studies, the class is broken up into three groups by numbering off 1-3 and creating groups based on said numbers. Each group will stand in a designated ‘corner’ surrounding a pile of cue cards scattered in the center, each displaying the name of a different organism. Each group will have their own bristol board labeled with the six different taxonomic kingdoms (animalia, plantae, protista, fungi, eubacteria, and archaebacteria). When the activity begins, one team member is to run into the center, collect a cue card, return to their group’s corner, and collaborate/discuss with their team to correctly match and tape it to its corresponding kingdom. We would use this activity as a way to review and discuss as a group organisms and their kingdoms prior to a summative assessment.
Variation/progression
Students can be assigned roles (the runner, the approver, etc.) depending on their comfort level with the activity.
Images of organisms can be used alongside names to provide visual aid.
To make it more challenging, binomial nomenclature may be used instead of organisms’ common names.
Cue cards should be replaced with water/weather-proof medium (bean bags, wood cookies, etc.)
