Comparing and Ordering Fractions

Equipment list

  • Weather friendly set of 1-100 numbers

  • Popsicle sticks/fraction bar

  • String for number line (optional)


Explanation

  1. Students will come to the center to get a number from 1-100.

  2. Next, they will find a partner with another student so that together they represent a fraction.

  3. Together they will come collect a fraction bar from facilitator

  4. The paired students will form a number line from smallest to largest with the other pairs in the class

  5. This can end after one cycle or can be repeated until all numbers are paired (If time permits)


Variation/progression

  • Find a correct fraction for a percent we call out.

  • Solve a problem and run to find the correct percents

  • Make the largest or smallest or closest to 1 fraction. Use improper fractions, mixed fractions, decimals.
