ELA Activator: Alphabet / Letter Sound Scramble

Equipment list

No equipment necessary.

However, to support visual learners, consider using visual clues of your choice.

Explanation

Invite students to spread out individually throughout your learning area (this could be indoors or outdoors).

Call out the word "scramble". Students then begin to move about freely within the learning space.

Call out the word "freeze" to stop student movement. Call out "pair" to have students pair up with the student closest to them.

Call out a letter name or sound. (Or hold up visual clue).

Pairs of students work together to create the associated letter with their bodies.

Celebrate the students' creativity by moving around and highlighting their different letter formations.

Call out "scramble" and the process begins again.

Variation/progression

Spelling variation

Call out and/or represent a word that students will need to spell in groups using their bodies.

Students will group themselves according to the number of letters in the word that is called/represented.

Depending on group size and formation, students may represent more than one letter in a word.

Encourage groups to share and debrief each word.
