Fraction Building
Equipment list
Clip boards, blank fraction circles, fraction strips, or any other way to shade or build fractions, clear plastic covers, white board markers, white board, index cards, linking cubes, iPad pictures or some way to randomly choose groups.
Explanation
After students choose their picture card randomly they find the clipboard with their picture on it. On their clipboard they will also find blank fraction sheets ( as many different ones as possible or needed) a marker and whiteboard marker. With their clipboard they will have a linking cubes or any other hands on materials to model fractions of a whole or set. They have a whiteboard to draw a picture of the fraction they are working on. So together they will be shading, drawing and modeling a fraction. To get this fraction they run to two ipads that have spinners on them with what ever numbers you choose. One ipad is labeled denominator the other is numerator. The students use the cue cards and markers to write the fraction using symbols and runs back to their group to shade, model and draw the fraction. I had them take a picture of their work with group ipads at this point before running for their next fraction. Use their cue cards in other activities. Have fun.
