Front End Adjustment Obstacle Course

  • Cue cards with multiple digit numbers written on them

  • Baskets/bins

  • Playground equipment (for obstacle course, if available).

Explanation

Students work in pairs and form a line at one end of the activity area.

Teacher sends each team into the activity area at regular intervals. One team member follows the obstacle route set out on the left side of the activity area, and one team member follows the obstacle route set out on the right side of the activity area. Half way through the obstacle route, each team member will pick up a card from a basket/bin with a 3-4 digit number written on it. The team completes the obstacle course together, returning to the teacher. Once back at the teacher, the teams front-end adjust each number to the place value determined by the teacher.

Variation/progression

Front-end adjusted numbers can be multiplied, added, subtracted, or divided.
