Language Arts Relay Race: Synonyms, Antonyms, and Homophones

Equipment list

  • (Previously created) list of vocabulary words.

Explanation

Students line up in colour teams.

Teacher provides a vocabulary word, (e.g. "Large"), and asks student to provide a synonym for this word. Runner goes back to the team to think of a synonym. (e.g. “big”)

The next runner comes back to the teacher, repeats “ big ”, and waits for a new word.

The process repeats for every new word.

Variation/progression

Antonym Relay

The same activity can be done for antonyms. For example, the teacher says “large” and the runner goes back to the team to think of a word like “small”. The next runner returns to the teacher with “small”, and the process continues.

Homophone Relay

The same activity can be done for homophones. For example, the teacher says “whole”, and the runner goes back to the team to think of the homophone “hole”. The next runner returns to the teacher with “hole”, and the process continues.

Participants’ feedback on activity

This activity provides an opportunity for high-intensity physical activity for students.

To increase PA even more, select a longer distance between where the teams line up, and where the teacher stands.
