Learning Circle with Geometry

Equipment list

  • Laminated A3 sheets with large pictures of colourised geometrical figures, both two- and three-dimensional.

Explanation

Select 4 to 8 pupils to form a large circle, each one holding a laminated sheet. The other pupils all go into the circle. The teacher shouts the name of a geometrical figure, and pupils run towards the figure they think it is. After a while, the pupils holding the figures are replaced by others. It is possible to give points to those who are first to reach the right figure. For example: the one who is first gets three points, the second gets two and the third gets one.

Variation/progression

The laminated sheets can be spread over a large area, and the pupils must run and look for the right one and stand beside it. Since they are one the ground, the sheets are not easily visible for all participants, but this can serve as a continuation to the other activity.

Participants’ feedback on activity

Try to shout the name of a figure that is not in the circle and see what happens. It is also possible to vary the way pupils should move within the circle, for example by hopping on one leg or the both of them, or walking on all fours.
