Multiplication Relay Race
Equipment list
A3 laminated sheet and laminated numbers from the 6, 7, 8 and 9 tables (without X 1 and 10). Answers in the attachment are visible on both sides, but each side may also show a different answer.
Explanation
Each team has a laminated A3 sheet (colour-coded) with a table where to sort out the answers. Place a box with numbers from the multiplication tables the pupils will work with, 20 to 40 yards away. Half-teams run to fetch a number and place it on the table, while the other half-teams fetch a number. The teacher decides how many numbers can be fetched at each run.
Variation/progression
Make similar arrangements with other parts of the multiplication tables. You can use small slalom cones or taller ones with bars (as for an obstacle race) for the teams to crawl under or jump over.
Participants’ feedback on activity
Numbers have the same colour as the table, so as to avoid mixing the numbers. It is advisable to write the number on two sides of the tiles. The activity becomes more intense if participants have to race up and downhill. Sledges can be used in winter..
