“Name the Activist” Relay

Equipment list

  • Coloured pylons

  • Laminated colour-coded clues

  • Small Box

  • Clipboards

Explanation

This lesson is a review to compliment a unit on equity and inequity through social justice movements. Students have learned about social justice warriors around the world and the relay game will give clues for each team to guess the activist.

To set up the activity, place pylons approximately 12 feet opposite from where your teams will line up. Pylons will be spaced evenly and each will have a box containing colour-coded clues. There should be 3 clues for each activist and those three clues should be the same colour. Have at least 6 activists in each box for a total of 18 cards.

Depending on the number of students, teams of 3-5 people will be created. For 12 students, make three team of 4 students. The teams will be given a colour of pylon that they are running towards. Each team will line up on side together, once the teacher says “you can begin” then one to two members from each team will run or walk towards their assigned pylon and collect one clue. Once they have the clue, they will run back to their team and two more students will run to the pylon to collect the next clue of the same colour. The goal is to start guessing which of the social movement leaders they have based on the clues. There are 3 clues in total. Once the team has the answer, they will do jumping jacks to get the teacher’s attention. Once the answer is approved by the teacher, the relay starts again for their next round of clues.

Variation/progression

Students may choose to walk to retrieve their clues and only use their arms when doing the jumping jacks. Students will have access to a word bank of the social justice activists on a clipboard. If a student is not comfortable with the activity, they can be assigned as the “name keeper” in charge of holding and marking off the activists’ names on the clipboard.

Note about safety:

Choose a flat surface that is free of obstacles and vehicles. This activity can be enjoyed inside a gymnasium as well.

Participants’ feedback on activity

The students enjoyed this activity. It was beneficial to have one more poem than the number of groups for early finishers.
