Nova Scotia Habitats: Four Corners

Equipment list

  • Sign for each corner (forest, ocean, sky, lakes)

  • Projector/screen (optional)

  • Word list of Nova Scotia wildlife in English and Mi’kmaw (see below for reference)

  • Music (optional)

Explanation

Set-up:

Place and secure four signs (forest, ocean, sky, and lakes) in four corners of your selected learning area.

There will be multiple rounds played.

All students will start each round in the centre of the learning area.

The teacher selects an animal, and then reads aloud both the English and Mi’kmaw words for this animal. Students repeat both words aloud as many times as desired. (see reference below for support with proper pronunciation)

The music will start and the students can move towards the correct habitat corner, while acting like, and making the sounds of, the selected animal.

Once the music stops, the students need to be in one of the four corners.

The teacher will then pronounce the animal's name in Mi’kmaw and the students will repeat.

The teacher can ask the students some questions about why they picked that habitat. (Some animals could belong to multiple habitats.)

Students return to the centre to begin the next round.

Variation/progression

Universal Design for Learning:
Students can move between spaces however they can/want to, there is no ‘right’ way.

Students who are unable to move between corners will be given their own ‘habitat signs’ that they can hold up. They are still encouraged to act like the animal however they wish.

Music helps take attention off of individual students, while not being overstimulating.
