Explanation
Students are divided into groups of four. Each team is provided with sidewalk chalk. Each team draws 9 or more circles, depending on the content of the lesson, on a concrete learning area of the teacher’s choice.
The circles should be large enough so that all students in the group can stand inside each circle.
Lesson Summary
During this grade 4 lesson, the teacher will draw flashcards with various multiplication facts. (In this case, we will be working on 9 multiplication facts.) Students will be tasked with finding the answer to the flashcards using their multiplication strategies and jumping into the circle made with chalk that contains the correct product. The lesson also includes a follow-up mini-lesson that can be conducted if the first activity is completed early.
See links below for a more detailed explanation.
Variation/progression
Variation 1: Draw a multiplication question
The teacher creates small pieces of paper with appropriate multiplication questions. For example, multiplication questions from 9x0 - 9x9, and even some other multiplication facts for students who need a challenge!
Once students are given their multiplication question, it is their job to grab a piece of chalk and use the chalk to answer the multiplication question and to draw the strategy they used to show their work. The teacher will circulate while this is happening, taking notes and helping students who need extra support.
