Pattern Me!
Equipment list
Creativity
A spacious area for movement (indoor or outdoor)
Explanation
This activity aligns with the Nova Scotia Primary Math Curriculum outcome PR01, where students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of repeating patterns (two or three elements). They'll identify, reproduce, extend, and create patterns using manipulatives, sounds, and actions.
By the time students participate in this activity, they should already be familiar with patterns. This activity serves as a fun and engaging review, incorporating movement to reinforce their learning.
Students are grouped into teams of 4 (or based on class size), and the teacher will guide them through three rounds, each focusing on different themes: Shapes, Sounds, and Letters. For each round, students will create their own pattern using their bodies, sounds, or letters, depending on the theme.
Round 1: Shapes
Students will create an ABAB pattern using their bodies to represent shapes. They can form shapes such as a hand heart, a circle, or a triangle. Afterward, all groups will gather and share their patterns with the class. The teacher can offer additional examples to help students unfamiliar with the task.
Round 2: Sound
Now, students will create an ABAB pattern using sound. They can stomp, clap, or make any noise with their voices to form the pattern. Once the groups complete their sound patterns, they will return to the center to present their patterns.
Round 3: Letters
In this round, students will form an ABAB pattern by creating letters with their bodies. The teacher will offer examples if necessary. Once all groups finish, they will present their patterns to the class.
Group reflection:
To wrap up, the class will create a whole-group pattern line based on one of the themes (Shapes, Sounds, or Letters). Students can suggest components (e.g., specific shapes, sounds, or letters) to use in the class pattern. When everyone is ready, the teacher will go down the line, and students will say or show their part of the pattern.
Variation / Progression:
• Multiple components: Students can represent multiple components in their group’s pattern if desired.
• More challenging patterns: Encourage students to create two different patterns during each round, allowing each group member to contribute to the pattern creation.
• Shape exploration: In the shape round, ask students guiding questions about the characteristics of shapes when flipped or folded (e.g., "What happens if you flip this rectangle around?" or "What if you spin this triangle?").
• Space considerations: This activity can be done indoors or outdoors. As the space increases, students can incorporate more movement into their patterns.
• Advanced letter activity: During the letter round, ask students to create words that follow the ABAB pattern to challenge their creativity.
• Musical addition: In the sound round, musical instruments can be introduced to add an extra layer of fun and learning through sound.
Participants” Feedback on Activity:
"Engaging and fun way to review patterns while getting the students moving!"
"Great for building teamwork and creativity."
