Assembling Cut-up Poems

Equipment list

Large envelopes, each containing a cut up poem from the shared reading. One envelope per group of students.

Explanation

Groups of students, chosen at random, stand at the starting point.

Cut up poems in their envelopes are placed at a given distance - one cut-up poem per group of students.

When ready, pairs of students run to their group's envelope, pick a line from the poem and take it back to their group. Pairs alternate until all lines of the poem have been collected.

While the different pairs collect parts of the poem, the other members of the group begin to assemble the poem.

The teacher checks the finished poems and, if time allows, the groups exchange envelopes to try another poem.

Variation/progression

Poems may be cut into words or lines depending on the level of challenge you are looking for.

Participants’ feedback on activity

The students enjoyed this activity. It was beneficial to have one more poem than the number of groups for early finishers.
