Seeds on the Move

Equipment list

  • The book “Seeds Move” by Robin Page

  • 5 types of seeds

  • Sealable, clear plastic bags

  • Magnifying glasses

  • Clip boards

  • Paper

  • Pencils

Explanation

Prep: Teacher will bag the 5 different types of seeds in sealable clear plastic bags. The bags will be placed in different outdoor locations, to make “seed stations”. Alternatively, the activity can be done indoors with enough space.

The teacher will read aloud the book “Seeds Move” by Robin Page to the class. Each page describes a type of movement that seeds follow. The teacher will ask students to demonstrate the movement around the room after each page. Once complete the teacher will divide the class into five groups. Each group will get a clipboard, paper, and magnifying glass. Each group will begin at a different seed station. They will have three minutes to record their observations. When the time is up the teacher will indicate that it is time to move to the next station and say a type of seed movement from the read aloud. Students will move to each seed with the movement indicated (e.g. flying) and make detailed observations. Option when finished to gather as a large group to compare and contrast observations.

Variation/progression

As an extension you can ask students to infer what plants the different seeds come from. Students may also infer how these seeds move using the descriptors from the read aloud. You can also change the observation objects to other items such as leaves, rocks, food etc.

Participant’s feedback on activity

When this activity was done in our seminar class the feedback was really positive. Our classmates enjoyed observing the different seeds while engaging in movements connected from the read aloud.
