The Great Sentence Scramble

Equipment

4 white Bristol boards

Colored Bristol board paper cut into pieces, each containing a word for a sentence

Velcro for the backs of the word pieces and Bristol boards

Punctuation marks for each group

Explanation

  • Split the class into 4 groups. Each group will be assigned a specific sentence type (e.g., statement, question, exclamation).

  • Place action word pieces in the center of the learning area. Each group will have a Bristol board at the opposite end, with the correct punctuation for their sentence type written on it.

  • On "go," the first member of each group runs to the center, picks up a word, and returns to their group. They will discuss where it fits in their sentence.

  • When the group is ready, the next person runs to the opposite side, sticks the word on their Bristol board in the appropriate spot, and returns.

  • The activity continues until all groups have completed their sentences.

  • Wrap-Up Discussion: Once all groups finish, review each sentence together. Focus on capitalization, punctuation, and word order, reinforcing key grammar concepts.

Variations / Progression

  • For younger students, you can simplify by providing pre-written sentences with missing words for them to find.

  • For older students, challenge them by adding more complex sentences or encouraging them to create their own words to complete the sentences.

  • Students can swap sentences with a partner to check for proper punctuation and capitalization.
