Friends of 10! (Partitioning)

Equipment list

  • 10 bowling pins (alternatively, use cups)

  • 1 bowling ball per group (alternatively, use a tennis ball or plastic ball)

  • 1 paper towel or dry-erase eraser per group

  • 1 dry-erase marker per group

  • Worksheets (pictorial, numeral, and written representations of 10 in two parts)

  • Clipboards (if doing the activity outside)

Explanation

  1. Split the class into small groups (group size depends on the number of sets of bowling pins or cups available).

  2. Each group gets a set of 10 bowling pins (or cups) and a bowling ball (or alternative).

  3. Hand out one of three worksheets to each group (pictorial, numeral, or written representation of 10 in two parts).

  4. Students take turns rolling the ball towards the pins. The pins that remain standing represent one part, and the fallen pins represent the other part.

  5. After each roll, students count the pins that are standing and the ones that have fallen, then place a checkmark in the box beside the correct representation of 10 in two parts on their worksheet.

  6. Reset the pins and repeat until all combinations of 10 are explored.

  7. Rotate roles so that every student has a chance to roll the ball, count the pins, check off their box, and reset the pins.

  8. Students work together to decide how many pins are standing or fallen and mark the appropriate box on the worksheet.

  9. Repeat with a different worksheet or continue practicing to solidify understanding of partitioning 10 into different combinations.

Variations / Progression

  • Use multiple worksheets, each showing different representations of 10 in two parts. Students can complete each worksheet in turn for additional practice.

  • If possible, pair students with older "book buddies" to assist with setting up the pins and counting.

  • Integrate other subjects:

    • Social Studies: Encourage teamwork and cooperation within groups.

    • English Language Arts: Have students explain their reasoning to peers as they work through the activity.

    • Physical Education: Discuss the importance of following activity rules and respecting equipment and space during the physical activity.
