Dance An Equation

Equipment list

None

Explanation

Divide students into groups of three. Ask each of them to pick a movement they can repeat and count--it can be a dance move, a sports move, or just however they feel like moving their bodies today. Show them how to make a plus sign (both arms held out to each side parallel to the ground), a minus sign (one arm held out to the side parallel to the ground) and an equals sign (both arms held out parallel to the ground on the same side). Have each group of three stand in a line, then give them addition or subtraction equations. The first student in each group repeats their move the number of times as the first number, then makes a plus or equal sign to pass it to the middle person, who repeats their personal move the number of times as the second number of the equation, then makes an equals sign to pass it to the third student, who makes their move the number of times to create the answer. They can count out loud as they make their moves--the whole group can count together to solve the equation as a group.

Variation/progression

Use a 10-sided die for each group to roll numbers for equations.
