Math Activator: Operation Scramble
Equipment list
Single digit number cards.
Explanation
Provide students with single digit number cards. Ensure they keep their numbers visible throughout the activity.
Invite students to spread out individually throughout your learning area (this could be indoors or outdoors).
Call out the word "scramble". Students then begin to move about freely within the learning space.
Call out the word "freeze" to stop student movement. Call out "pair" to have students pair up with the student closest to them.
Call out the math operation you would like students to apply. (Or hold up visual clue).
Pairs of students work together to solve the math expression they have created using their number cards.
Students can represent their answer (sum, product, difference, quotient) verbally and physically.
Celebrate the students' creativity by moving around and highlighting their different number formations.
Call out "scramble" and the process begins again.
Variation/progression
Depending on your grade level, consider up to 3 digit numbers.
With larger digit math expressions, students may use a whiteboard to show their thinking and process.
